Garden Tour for the Week of 02 Sep 22
This week, the tomatoes and peppers are coming in! The Shishito plant is in overdrive, and we even got a couple of poblano/ancho peppers. We harvested one Cherokee Purple tomato and several other tomatoes (not sure what varieties they are, we lost the tag!) a little bit early to ripen on the counter.
Small but mighty harvest!
We also harvested one big yellow tomato (I think it’s a Lemon Boy) that ripened entirely on the vine. We’ll be making this one into something yummy this holiday weekend.
Such a hefty lemon boy.
One thing that gardening will force you to learn is patience—whether you want to learn it or not. And this year, the San Marzanos are the ones teaching that lesson. They are HUGE, but they’re taking their sweet time ripening.
Waiting for these guys to ripen.
In the brassica (and cucumber) bed, we are finally seeing some development on the cucumbers. This plant struggled hard throughout the spring and most of the summer. Between getting assaulted by bunnies, the crazy amount of rain, and the wild temperature swings, we thought this plant was a lost cause. But it’s a trooper and has pushed through all the hardship to start producing some baby cukes! Hopefully we have enough time left in the season to get a few harvested.
The rest of the brassica bed is still doing well. I don’t want to start counting my produce before it ripens, but I think this might be the year where we actually grow some harvestable broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Maybe even some kohlrabi??
Baby brassicas growing into big strong veggies.
Finally, our second round of potatoes are doing terrific. If all continues to go well, we’ll be harvesting these in late October or early November—just in time for the holidays!
I didn’t manage to get any decent pictures of our zucchini this week—it is, by far, our most prolific producer—but I’ll be sure to get pictures of our zuc abundance for next week’s tour.
