Doing Stuff and Things
I don’t know what’s been up with me lately, but the idea of putting together a post has been overwhelming… We’ve done SO MUCH STUFF lately… And THINGS! But trying to come up with a way to turn it into blog content has warped my brain.
Booker doing a routine inspection of “something”… just don’t ask her what.
So, let’s do this hockey!
If this place was closer to us, I don’t know if we’d bother growing (or at least attempting to grow) as much as we do.
First off, we took a three hour tour to a farm market south of Seattle because I saw in my local garden/homesteading group that they were selling 25lb boxes of tomatoes for $30. Since our tomatoes were severely stunted by weird weather, we decided to take the mini-road trip and stock up on tomatoes for the season.
My tomato processing station
We purchased around 120lbs of tomatoes and about 20lbs of string beans, and I got to processing them. My goal has always been to can enough tomatoes to last us a whole year. And, yes, part of that goal is that we also grow enough tomatoes to do that… but while we are still dialing in our gardening skills, purchasing locally grown tomatoes is a fair compromise.
This isn’t even half the jars
We ended up with 56 quarts of canned tomatoes. Between pasta sauces, soups, stews, and chili, I think that will be enough to get us through next year’s tomato harvest. .
We harvested a boatload of tomatillos and peppers and made salsa verde with them.
Our tomatillos grew like crazy!
And our girls are now producing so many eggs that we have started pickled egg experiments (that are astoundingly delicious).
Ginger soy and pepper dill pickled eggs.
I will be posting more about the pickled eggs (including recipes) later. We’ll also be planting our garlic and clearing our garden in the next couple of weeks, which we will, of course post an update on when it happens.
In the meantime, happy spooky season!
The chickens had a blast carving this guy.
